Cross dock

Cross dock refers to a logistics method in which goods arrive at a warehouse or distribution centre and are almost immediately (with minimal delay) transferred to other vehicles for further distribution without prolonged storage. A warehouse designed for cross-docking usually has a larger number of loading bays on both sides of the building, allowing efficient receipt of goods on one side and their rapid dispatch on the other. This process greatly speeds up the distribution of goods and minimises storage costs.

The double-headed warehouse, which is typical of cross docking, allows goods to be received and dispatched simultaneously on opposite sides of the building, increasing efficiency and reducing the time goods remain in the warehouse. This model is ideal for operations where the emphasis is on quick turnaround of goods, such as fresh food, fast moving consumer goods, or shipments that are destined for immediate distribution to retail or manufacturing units.
